I am happy to announce that Darío Gil, Ph.D., IBM Senior Vice President and Director of Research and a member of our Board of Trustees, has been nominated by President Donald Trump to serve as Undersecretary for Science and Innovation at the U.S. Department of Energy.
The DOE’s Office of Science and Innovation is a major driver of scientific discovery and innovation through its funding of university-affiliated researchers and stewardship of its world-class facilities. Darío’s deep understanding of science, and appreciation of the importance of research and education, make him an inspired choice for the position.
This nomination follows his recent elections as the first industry-based chair of the National Science Board in more than 30 years, and member of the National Academy of Engineering for his contributions to the “advancement and practical use of artificial intelligence and quantum computing in industry and society.” He holds a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from MIT.
Darío is a valued member of our Board, and his nomination as Undersecretary speaks volumes about the impact of his work, both at IBM and in the STEM fields worldwide. We are proud of his accomplishments and honored that he is part of our community.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. Darío Gil on this significant nomination, and in wishing him a quick confirmation.
