Remarks at Summer Garden Party to Welcome the Class of 2022
Summer Garden Party to Welcome the Class of 2022
Thank you, Ms. Mueller, for your kind introduction. Please join me in offering a round of applause to our host for this very lovely event.
Nancy Mueller is a member of the Rensselaer Board of Trustees and a generous supporter of the Institute. An entrepreneur at heart, Nancy founded Nancy's Specialty Foods, the largest processor and marketer of gourmet frozen quiche products in the world. She served as President of the company for 22 years before selling it in 1999.
As a philanthropist and someone who was keenly interested in promoting health and well-being, Nancy championed and enabled us to build the Mueller Center in the heart of the Troy campus.
I am sure that many of you will enjoy the gymnasium, facilities for intramural and club sports, fitness classes, and wellness programs that can be found at the Mueller Center, which honors Nancy's late husband, Glenn Mueller of the Rensselaer Class of 1964, who also served as a Trustee.
Today's event has become a time-honored and beloved tradition, providing a warm welcome for our incoming students from Northern California.
We have some other Rensselaer Trustees with us today that I would like to recognize.
Mr. Frank Fischer of the Classes of 1964 and 1965 and Mrs. Jeanne Fischer, and Mr. Curtis Priem of the Class of 1982, Mrs. Cindi Priem and their son, Gabriel.
I also would like to take a moment to introduce members of my Cabinet who have joined us today.
- Mr. Craig Cook, Secretary of the Institute and General Counsel
- Dr. Jonathan Dordick, Special Adviser on Strategic Initiatives
- Mr. Graig Eastin, Vice President for Institute Advancement
- Ms. Richie Hunter, Vice President for Strategic Communications and External Relations
- Mr. John Kolb, Vice President for Information Services and Technology and Chief Information Officer

I am delighted to welcome the remarkable young men and women who will be part of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Class of 2022 – as well as their families, current Rensselaer students, and our wonderful alumni and alumnae here today.
I know that you, the members of the Class of 2022, all are brilliant and talented young people, for you not only chose to attend Rensselaer, but we chose you, out of more than 20,000 applicants, to join the Rensselaer family.
It is a family that, for nearly 200 years, has included men and women who truly have changed the world, including scientists, astronauts, architects, engineers, corporate leaders, and entrepreneurs in in a broad spectrum of fields.
You too will change the world – and it is for that very reason that we are so excited for you to be joining us.
You are about to embark upon one of the greatest adventures of your lives. At Rensselaer you will discover a world-class technological research university that serves as a great crossroads for talented people across disciplines, sectors, geographies, and generations.
When you arrive on campus, we will help you to make important connections with people whose knowledge and perspectives are different from yours – students, faculty, and leaders in all fields who will help to expand your view of the world.
Through these interactions, we will ensure you possess the intellectual agility, multicultural sophistication, and global view to succeed and to lead.
Our Office of the First Year Experience will help you to make a seamless transition to college life. This is part of an overarching student experience we call Clustered Learning, Advocacy, and Support for Students, or CLASS.
The clustering I refer to is both residential, ensuring that you live within a tight-knit, caring community—and developmental—ensuring that you will be offered the right chances to grow at the right stages of your college careers
Our student experience is designed to help you thrive as you pursue your personal and professional passions. I encourage you to speak with our current students here today who can elaborate on what makes a Rensselaer education so special.
Before the school year begins, at student orientation, and at the five-day Navigating Rensselaer & Beyond program which begins right before classes start, you will have opportunities to bond with fellow first-year students through outdoor adventures, cultural programs, and service opportunities. At the same time, you will come to discover the beautiful and historic city of Troy, our campus, and the lovely region in which Rensselaer is located.
We also are in our second year of The Arch, a unique opportunity that we believe will greatly enhance your educational experience. During the summer following your sophomore year, as the only undergraduate class on campus, you will have the complete attention of your professors and our Student Life staff, at a key point when you are pivoting to more advanced work.
There also will be unique academic, professional, cultural, and recreational experiences tailored just for you.
During your away semester, you will be able to enjoy an extended internship or co-op assignment, do research, launch a company, or volunteer for a great cause. You will be encouraged you to pursue your passions abroad as well. Ultimately, your experience will lead you to change the world!
To the parents here today, welcome to the Rensselaer family. I look forward to your active engagement and to getting to know you.
To all, have a safe, healthy, and happy summer.
