James J. Barba, Esq.

Since 1995, James J. Barba has been President and Chief Executive Officer of Albany Med, the only academic health sciences center in northeastern New York. He oversees the largest locally governed health care system in 25 counties as well as Albany Medical College, one of the nation’s oldest medical schools; a biomedical research operation; a workforce of more than 13,000; and a Physician Practice Group of over 650. From 1994 to 2006, he also served as the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Albany Medical Center.

 

During his tenure, he has guided the affiliations with Columbia Memorial Health and Saratoga Hospital to create the Albany Med system and is directing the most ambitious expansion on the campus of Albany Med since it was founded in 1839. Construction was recently completed on a $52 million pediatric emergency department, the only one of its kind in the region.

 

Well recognized in the arena of health care and health care reform, Mr. Barba has served on numerous special commissions and councils. Currently, at the invitation of Governor Andrew M. Cuomo, he serves on the Capital Region Regional Economic Development Council, which he chaired from 2012 to 2017.

 

Mr. Barba also serves his community on the Board of Directors of the Center for Economic Growth, The College of Saint Rose, and Park Playhouse.

 

Mr. Barba was honored as a Citizen Laureate of the University at Albany and was recognized with the Career Achievement Award by both the Albany Business Review and Siena College, where he was also awarded an honorary degree. He received the Community Partner Award from The College of Saint Rose and the “Envoy Salute” from the Albany-Colonie Regional Chamber of Commerce. In addition, he is a member of the Tech Valley Hall of Fame and was cited for his leadership in health care by Hudson Valley Community College, the American Heart Association, the Baby Institute, Community Caregivers, Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, JDRF Northeastern New York Chapter, and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.

 

Formerly with the Albany law firm of Hiscock & Barclay, Mr. Barba is a graduate, cum laude, of the University of Notre Dame Law School, and a graduate, summa cum laude, of Siena College.
