Vadim Thomas Promoted to Associate Vice President, Public Safety and Emergency Management
From the President's Desk
I am pleased to announce the promotion of Vadim Thomas to the position of Associate Vice President, Public Safety and Emergency Management. Mr. Thomas will continue to report to the Vice President for Administration with a dotted line to me, as President, for strategic oversight.
Mr. Thomas has served as Director of Public Safety and Emergency Management at Rensselaer during the past year, and as Associate Vice President of Public Safety and Emergency Management, Mr. Thomas will continue to lead and direct all campuswide programs and activities related to campus safety and emergency management. In addition, he will oversee educational awareness and crime prevention; ensure security for special events; coordinate public safety activities with various city, county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies when appropriate; and oversee a wide range of safety, public safety, emergency management, and services, which include responding to incidents or accidents, medical or fire emergencies, and requests for public assistance.
Prior to beginning his career with Rensselaer, Mr. Thomas served as the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Special Agent in Charge for the Albany Field Office and has had a more than 22-year career in public safety administration and law enforcement and has international experience that includes leading the Corruption Investigations Unit in Afghanistan, working in conjunction with European, Australian, and Canadian law enforcement agencies. While working at the FBI, Mr. Thomas received the Director's Award for Excellence in Compliance and Integrity, the Shield of Bravery Medal for Actions in the World Trade Center in 2001, the Combat Theater Award for Service in Afghanistan from the FBI, and the NYPD Russian-American Officers Association Lifetime Achievement Award.
Mr. Thomas holds two master's degrees — a master's degree in national security and strategic studies from the U.S. Naval War College, and a master's degree in law and diplomacy, international security, and international law from Tufts University. He received his bachelor's degree in international relations and government from the University of Notre Dame.
I am confident that Mr. Thomas’ continued leadership of the Department of Public Safety and Emergency Management will result in a new level of distinction, and support of the Institute as a leader in the 21st century as a top-tier technological research university with global reach and global impact.
