Pre-Campaign Ice Cream Social

Shirley Ann Jackson, Ph.D., President, Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute

Welcome, everyone, and thank you for coming this afternoon.

As you know, this upcoming weekend is Reunion and Homecoming, which always is particularly enjoyable, in that it brings together generations of Rensselaer students, past and present.

This year, however, is special, in that we also are launching a capital campaign, with three pillars:

  • First, to create an endowment for student scholarships, so there is no longer a gap between the financial aid we can offer and our students’ financial need.
  • Second, to create endowed faculty chairs so we can attract and retain the best faculty in the world—and to expand our faculty in crucial areas of research and education.
  • Third, to build out the campus for its third century, in terms of facilities for research, education, and student life.

We believe that this campaign will enhance the student experience at Rensselaer for many years to come. We hope that all of you will serve as ambassadors for Rensselaer, as it is today, this weekend with our returning alumni and alumnae.

We have many exciting events planned, including a series of “RED” talks on Friday—TED-style talks by Rensselaer faculty showing how the research being conducted here at the leading edge is addressing great global challenges—and a panel discussion on Saturday with some very powerful alumnae in industry that I would encourage you to attend.

We are going to announce the launch of our campaign on Friday evening at an All-Alumni event. As a show of pride and as a demonstration of your support for our capital campaign, I encourage you to wear the T-shirts we have given out this afternoon to any events, athletic games, or programs you attend throughout the week.

Thank you, and please, enjoy the sundaes!
